Services We Provide
Electrical Breaker Panel
Do you still have an ugly old fuse box? If so, it might be a good idea to have a qualified expert take a look at it and give you a professional opinion. Fuse boxes can become dangerous because of age when connections are no longer tight, or integral parts may have become corroded. You also cannot safely add any new circuitry in your home when a new outlet or dedicated circuit is needed. Kitchen updates, additions, and finished basements require new circuits, and some of these will require modern AFCI breakers to meet National Electric Code requirements. It’s also a fact that today we use more electricity than we did in past generations. If your home was built before the 1960’s, there was no consideration for the amount of electricity needed for microwaves and other small appliances, computers, air conditioning, and many other things. Your overall electrical system may not be sufficient for everything you’re using today. Call us for a quote on an electrical breaker panel upgrade.
What do you do when lights flicker, outlets don’t work, or breakers trip? Electrical troubleshooting is the hardest electrical skill to come by, because it takes years of experience and seeing a wide variety of situations to develop a good sense of how to find a problem. Our electricians are experts at finding and solving electrical problems in your home or business, and correcting what could be more than just a nuisance. We will find the problem quickly, and provide you with the best option on getting it fixed. Don’t take chances, trust the experts at Blue Star Electric to handle any electrical problem.
Electrical contractors in the State of Ohio are required to be licensed (this goes for several other trades too). This requires documented years of experience, passing an extensive technical exam, an Ohio business law exam, and carrying at least $500,000 of liability insurance. Contractors are also required to complete state approved continuing education requirements on a yearly basis in order to stay abreast of National Electric Code changes and technology. If you hire a non-licensed individual to perform electrical work in your home, you are not guaranteed any of these things. Imagine someone performing electrical work in your home that doesn’t know the most current code requirements, and doesn’t have insurance! It is for this reason that you should ALWAYS hire licensed professionals. Electrical contractors are required by Ohio law to display their license number on all forms of advertising.
We live in an ever increasing do-it-yourself society, where most everyone has a home store nearby that can provide a lot of DIY information. Electrical work however, is something that is best left to licensed professionals. But this doesn’t stop a lot of folks from performing electrical repairs or add-ons themselves. The unfortunate thing is that you may purchase a home where a previous homeowner did some questionable electrical work. Our electricians are experts at troubleshooting and repairing old work in homes that have every generation of wiring in them, even the earliest systems known as Knob-and-Tube. Remember, just because the light comes on when you flip the switch, doesn’t mean it’s wired correctly. And it definitely doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Electrical Lighting Retrofit
Great Lakes Electrical Service is an industry leader in performing all types of commercial and industrial electrical lighting retrofits. We can provide you with a free energy savings analysis, as well as an investment payback. We have performed retrofits for all types of old inefficient lighting like metal halide and T-12 fluorescent, and replaced with modern smart ballast technology for T-8 fluorescent, T-5 fluorescent, and LED lighting.
Dimmers come in many shapes and styles. They are an easy way to save on your electric bill. We can offer suggestions on a wide variety of dimmers to purchase or choose the dimmer of your choice and have us install it for you.
220 outlets (actually 240 Volts nominal) are commonly required in homes for such things as electric dryers, electric ranges, and window air conditioning units. Our electricians will install the appropriate receptacle device, the correct size wire and wiring method, as well as proper grounding to make the installation safe and code correct.
GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. These devices are receptacles that have a “Test” and “Reset” button on the device itself. The purpose these devices serve is to trip off if there is an unsafe ground fault condition. In other words, if electricity tries to go through YOU or something else to get to ground, it trips off. GFCI protection is required by code to be installed in certain types of locations that have been determined to be a higher risk of shock. Some of these locations include kitchen countertop, bathrooms, unfinished portions of basements, near any sink basin, garages, and or course outdoor locations. There are also breakers that can be installed in your electrical panel which can provide GFCI protection for the entire circuit.
Homes and businesses are filled with electrical outlets (also called receptacles) that are so commonly used that they are hardly given a thought. But if damaged or wired incorrectly, they can create a serious electrical hazard. One of the most common problems with highly used outlets is that they become “loose fitting”. Whenever you plug a cord into an electrical outlet, it should fit in snug and tight and not have the cord end sliding out. These loose connections can become hot and melt the device, or even start a fire. Old or loose outlets should be replaced. And those in homes should be of the tamper resistant type. Another common problem is when 2-prong outlets (or non-grounding outlets) are replaced with 3-prong outlets (or grounding outlets). This is a big NO NO because equipment plugged into them that requires a ground, can create a shock hazard if there isn’t one.

Arc Fault Protection
New residential wiring is now required by code to have Arc Fault Protection. Right now, this comes in the form of an AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupting) breaker that is installed in your electrical panel. These devices are designed to electrically sense when there is a dangerous arcing condition anywhere in the circuit.
If you’re selling your home, buying a home, own a rental property, or are just concerned about safety, our qualified electricians can quickly recognize electrical code violations and provide answers as to what the remedies should be. These electrical violations often include: ungrounded outlets, reversed polarity outlets, open wiring splices or splice boxes, no GFCI’s in the required locations, and some more extensive problems. If you’ve been given a list of electrical violations by a home inspector or city electrical inspector, give us a call and we’ll help you cross the items off!
Are you looking to redecorate a room in your home? A nice way to take the room in a different direction is to replace the existing light fixtures. Our skilled technicians can replace those hard to reach, stubborn old light fixtures. Every new light fixture comes with a sticker that states what type and wattage of lamp to use so that you’ll know that your fixture wiring is safe. We also install dusk to dawn post lights as well as low voltage landscape lighting.
Switches in our homes get used thousands of times, and can wear out from daily use. It seems that every home in America has one mystery switch that no one knows what it does! We are experts at troubleshooting switches and 3-way switches that aren’t working right, or installing them new. 3-way switching is used when switching a light on from more than one location like top and bottom of stairs, opposite ends of a hallway, or multiple doorways to a room.
